Women
The traditonal seperation in labor between men and women continues in the 1920's. Most women stayed at home and spent their lives as homemakers and mothers. Their work at home became easier with the invention of the washing machine and vacuum cleaner. Women participating in lobor stayed the same as well. The women who worked often stayed in cities where their work was limited to jobs such as clerks, nurses, teachers, and domestics. The women often recieved lower wages then men. Although they were able to vote, some chose not to.

During this time a widespread of education came. Many people believed in the value of education. The beliefs along with economic prosperity, stimulated more state governments to ecact school laws. The number of high school graduates had doubled to over 25 percent by the end of the 1920's

Religion
Tensions arose in society between the traditional values of rural areas and the modernizing forces of the cities. Large number of Protestants redifined their fath in a new way due to the change in role of women, the social gospel movement and scientific knowledge. Some people believed they coould accept Darwin's theory of evolution without abandoning their religious fath. Fundimentalism revolved around creationism. Protestant preachers in rural areas taught that every work in the bible must be accepted as true. Creationism was the idea the at god created the universe in seven days.
