SPORTS OF THE 1920s
The 1920s were known as the "Golden Age of American Sports," primarily because sports were at their all time high in attendance of people going to games and the amount of people around the nation playing sports. Baseball, for example was the most prosperous sport of the decade because every where you went, people were playing baseball whether it was in the north or the south, east coast or west coast. The most famous player to come out of the 1920s was the famous George H. "Babe" Ruth who transformed Yankees stadium into "the house that Ruth built" because so many people went to the games in hope Ruth would hit a home run. In addition to Ruth, another American icon that flourished during the 1920s was heavyweight boxer Jack Dempsey, who attracted a crowd that paid over $1 million to watch him fight and defeat French light heavyweight Georges Carpentier. The fight was so famous it became known as the "fight of the century." College football was at a all-time high and the most well known team, Notre Dame, was coached by legend coach Knute Rockne. Women also played a pivotal role in sports in the 1920s because they were breaking world record's, such as Caroline Gertude Ederle; who was the first woman to swim across the English Channel ever, and it took her 14 hours and 31 minutes. But what makes her record breaking time so important was that she beat the previous record in time by nearly two hours, and that record was held by a male.
