The 1920’s was controlled by the republicans where they had 3 republican presidents. Not just the executive branch but also in congress too. Former president Woodrow Wilson decided not to run for a third term. Starting with the 1920 election, women were now allowed to vote.

Calvin Coolidge won the election. He was the vice president under Warren Harding who obtained
popularity as the Massachusetts governor who broke the Boston police strike.

John W. Davis was the nominee for the Democrats. He was a conservative lawyer, former congressman and diplomat from West Virginia.
La Follette was the presidential nominee for a third party formed by the liberals. This was a progressive party who had done well being in a conservative era. Since Davis was a conservative, many liberal democrats supported the third party.

Herbert Hoover was the Reupublican nominee who won the elction of 1928. Hoover waas a self made millionaire and secretary of commerce. Hoover served the presidents in an administative role. He served under Wilson, Harding, and Coolidge but never campaigned for elective office.
Alfred E. Smith was the republican nominee that lost against Hoover. He was the governor of New York. Being of Roman Catholic and an opponent of prohibition, Smith was liked by many immigrants.
